Will someone crash the Tiger & Phil party?

We've got a pretty darn good field for this week's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, but I'm not surprised that most of the story lines that I've read so far are coming down to two players, defending champion Tiger Woods, and California favorite Phil Mickelson.  Phil looked in danger of missing the cut last week at Abu Dhabi but came charging back into contention and was looking to win but got derailed when he attempted to chip out of a bush right handed and double hit the ball.  And even though he didn't win, he was definitely the talk of the tournament (if I had $1 for every time I read "Phil the Thrill" on Twitter I could go on a mini-vacation!).
From a statistics standpoint, it almost seems crazy NOT to pick Tiger to win this week.  He's never missed a cut here, he's won it 7 times, and this tournament means something to him.  Woods is making his 13-14 PGA debut this week, but it's hard to call him rusty.

Phil hasn't won this event since 2001, but man, it's hard to count him out.  If fan encouragement counted for anything, the guy could win it without swinging a club.   I know if my Mom could, she'd hand him the trophy right now!

I don't know if you can call it a rivalry,
but there's something fun about Tiger & Phil being in contention - of course we don't know if that's going to happen yet, but we all WANT it to.

As I scanned through the field though, I've got a feeling there's a few guys that could steal the spotlight this week.  FedEx Cup points leader Jimmy Walker is in the field, along with quiet but steady Bill Haas, and arguably the best player without a Major, Lee Westwood.  Then there's Jason Day, who has been playing some golf lately, and one of the "other lefty's" Bubba Watson.

Hunter Mahan is making his first start of the 13-14 season, and we've also go Brandt Snedeker and Keegan Bradley ready to improve from last week.

Jordan Spieth is back along with Billy Horshel and Brian Stuard, who has been playing some great golf lately.

I'm happy to see Graham DeLaet in the field, and I've got high hopes for another good week by Justin Leonard.

Oh, and I can't forget Brendon de Jonge!  I swear this guy is either going to win this year or drive me to the loony bin.

But just when you think you've got a feel for the guys who could take a run at the title, there's still over 100 other guys that could have a hot week like Patrick Reed did last week and we have a whole different story come Sunday.

But I think it's hard not to argue that more TV's will be turned on this weekend if Tiger and Phil are in the hunt.    All I know is I'm looking forward to some TV time this weekend.  Enjoy Torrey Pines!
