Despite my best efforts (cheering, praying, rally caps, eating cheese) Steve Stricker did not get his first Major championship last Sunday. After Thursday's round, I almost felt like things had already slipped away when he carded a 2-over par 74, and the leader was at -6. But on Friday the weather came into play and a +1 (73) was almost 5 shots better than the scoring average of just over 78. 45 players shot 80 or worse that day (including Matt Kuchar- ouch!). At +3 he was still 7 shots back, but he made the cut and would be playing the weekend.

I not sure if Sam Johnson has completely warmed up to the whole FedEx Cup competition, but the fact that he gave a math geek like me a smile when I read is post last week gives me hope that he's at least giving the race for the Cup some consideration anyway. It seems to me that the FedEx Cup has finally been "generally accepted" after several years of complaints and criticism...with some of those complaints being justified as they firgured out how to make it competitive until the end. The other interesting thing that happened is that I think "idea" behind the cup isn't about being the "best player" anymore...they've sort of turned it into a "tour within a tour" and if you can survive to the final 30 you've got a chance (and I use the term "chance" loosely for most of the guys) to win $10 million. That is one huge chunk of change!! Bill Haas won $10 million of FedEx winnings last Sunday...heck, for him, it's like winning the lottery! He was 25th coming into the event and according to Sam, he needed some serious stars to align in order to get this huge payday. I bet he'd be the first to tell you that he's not the best player in the world right now, but he was the best for 4 days, and had to be WAY better than a host of players in order collect one giant check. A favorite song of mine by a group called 4Him, is called Measure of a Man… It’s been on my mind lately as I have been hearing bits and pieces about the upcoming President’s Cup and the selection process that will happen in about a month. The “filler version” of the Ryder Cup in off years definitely has its share of great players, drama, and talent, but it’s felt to me like it was almost “gimmicky”…”the Tie”, Michael Jordan, I don’t know…maybe it just hasn’t been around long enough to be revered yet, at least not in my mind anyway. There is really nothing better than having your favorite golfers being in contention coming into a Major or an end of season event like the Tour Championship...or the FedEx Cup finale. I'm thinking back to Greg Norman's hey days...it was like an emotional roller coaster for me - the highs of seeing him winning and crushing blows of seeing a few heart breaking losses. It's sort of hilarious that I am STILL picturing Larry Mize in the purple striped shirt jumping and running after knocking his chip in at the Masters all those years ago. But that is what being a golf fan is all about. Posted Sep 15 2010, 10:03 PM by Cathy Erickson
It's been a hectic few weeks in my little part of the world...just as I am entering my favorite golf month of the year my work world gets very busy. Usually I'm sort of giddy when it comes to talking about school taxes, but this year has been a combination of challenging and maddening...not to mention overwhelming enough that it's elbowing into my golf time! Holy cow, it's September 1. How did this happen? I am not ready to head into the downward slide of the golf season yet! It's funny, last night as we were playing in our weekly "Scramble Tuesday" event, it was like Mother Nature decided to let us know September was on the door step. It was hot and muggy as I left my office yesterday afternoon and my house felt like someone had left a heat lamp on all day when I walked in. Posted Feb 09 2010, 11:14 AM by Cathy Erickson
Can you picture the smile on my face? I'm sure it comes as no surprise that I'm a little bit giddy about seeing Steve Stricker hoisting the trophy at the Northern Trust Open (and seeing the "What's in Steve Stricker's Bag"!!). As I gave him a standing ovation in my living room Sunday afternoon, I couldn't help but think back to some of the commentary, or lack of commentary, about arguably the nicest guy on the PGA Tour at the end of last year. For those that didn't pay attention, Steve Stricker had a GREAT 2009 season! Posted Sep 15 2009, 01:59 PM by Cathy Erickson
Okay, so I think we can all admit that we probably like the FedEx Cup commercials we see when we watch golf on TV, but honestly, we probably don't know what the heck is going on with the FedEx competition besides the fact that Tiger is most likely in the lead (although Steve Stricker took over for one week!). I've decided that it's time to give the FedEx Cup some attention and throw in my own ideas for how to adjust it again for next season. |
AuthorWhen I found Tees2Greens website and forum I found a happy place. There were great people there and in 2009 they asked me if I wanted my own blog space. It was a dream come true!! The site is down now, but I was able to get all of my posts to be able to post here. I will always be grateful for all of the Tees2Greens folks!! ArchivesCategories
