Well, it's the day after the FINAL Q-school process as we know it, and while I failed to keep up to date here (sorry about that!), I did try to follow along when I had a chance (darn work has kept me busy!). Is it okay if I just get to the giddy parts right now? As you know, I'm a fan follower of all Minnesota Q-school participants - there have been some moderate successes, but since I've been following Q-school, no Minnesota golfer has made it into the Top 25 to earn their card...that's not to say no Minnesota golfer has ever made it (think Tom Lehman!), but we've had dry spell for awhile. Last year, Clayton Rask was looking poised to make a move after successfully passing through the first 2 stages, but the best he could do was get some status on the Nationwide (not Web.com) tour. But in what feels like a little golf gift to me, a Minnesotan has broken through and will have a PGA Tour card in 2013.

It's Q-School Time!! I know, I know, this isn't usually a hot topic in the golf world, but I can't help it, I'm a fan! But this year brings with it some sadness. Q-School, as we currently know it, will end after the final stage in California in December. The PGA Tour voted to change the route to the PGA Tour, eliminating the Q-school process starting in 2013. There'll still be a Q-school, but instead of joining the big Tour, guys will find themselves members of the Web.com tour (formally the Nationwide Tour). It should also be noted, the whole PGA Tour schedule will change starting in 2013 - the Fall Series that follows the Tour Championship will now be the beginning of the 2013-14 PGA Tour year and those events will be a part of the FedEx Cup points totals. There will be a three tournament event on the Web.com Tour that will determine which 50 players will get PGA Tour cards for the next year. Posted Jul 12 2012, 12:39 PM by Cathy Erickson
We knew it was coming. The PGA Tour has made no bones about the fact that Q-School, as we knew it, would cease to exist in the near future. Back in March, the PGA Tour announced the basic framework of how the new "path to the PGA Tour" would be designed, but they were still working out the details on how exactly the 50 Tour Cards would be distributed. Here's what I got out of the articles I read on http://www.pgatour.com/: Posted Dec 28 2011, 02:47 PM by Cathy Erickson
It's the last week of 2011 - I know I've said it before, but man, time sure flies sometimes. I'm sure you've gotten your fill of the "year in review" articles, lists, and rankings that pop up all through December. Best shots, best players, best equipment...you name it, and I'm sure someone has written about it. I have to admit that I wasn't a very good golf fan this year - my priorities were shuffled and my golf passion dropped a few rungs on the ladder (it was an awful feeling by the way!). I didn't keep up with my favorite players as much, and more importantly, I didn't play nearly as much golf as I should have. But that's not to say I didn't have golf on the brain sometimes. Here are some of the things I remember being on my mind in the 2011 PGA Tour world... Posted Oct 05 2011, 03:03 PM by Cathy Erickson
The last few months have obviously been a little busy for me since I just realized that I missed out on announcing the beginning of the 2011 Q-School journey. Ah, Q-School...one of my favorite yearly golf dramas that goes seemingly unnoticed by almost the entire golf world. Hundreds of golf dreamers, golf veterans, and future golf super stars embark on this journey each year, in the hopes of being presented a PGA Tour Card after the Final Qualifying stage that includes 6 grueling rounds and less than 30 invitations to become a full-fledged member" the Tour". Since Masters fever hit me early this year, I almost missed the news about the PGA Tour Policy Committee's proposed changes for how players qualify for the Tour and the Nationwide Tour. As you know, the PGA Tour's Qualifying School (Q-School) one of the few ways a player can make it to the "big dance" instead of toiling on any one of the developmental tours or companion tours around the world. According to an article on www.pga.com , the change was explained this way: Posted Nov 30 2010, 08:34 AM by Cathy Erickson
There are 216 players in Florida right now on the verge of 6-day golf marathon...at the finish line are 25 PGA Tour Cards...for the next 50 there are Nationwide Tour Cards, and for the rest, a "conditional" status on the Nationwide Tour that could get them some playing time in 2011. But you know what they all want. They want to say "I'm on the PGA Tour in 2011". Posted Sep 30 2010, 12:42 PM by Cathy Erickson
What in the...? It's already September 30! It seems like just yesterday I was looking forward to my favorite golf month of the year and now, just like that, it's over. I had some fun days golfing this past month, and even though we had a few rainy days, I was able to get out on the course for at least 9 holes whenever I didn't have to work late (which was too often if you asked me!). The sun setting earlier has been a total drag. By 7pm it's very hard to see the golf balls and there is a definite chill in the air by that time, too. How can daylight savings time not be until November 7??? This does not help golfers in Minnesota at all!! If we could get that extra hour NOW, I'd be a lot happier. Holy cow, it's September 1. How did this happen? I am not ready to head into the downward slide of the golf season yet! It's funny, last night as we were playing in our weekly "Scramble Tuesday" event, it was like Mother Nature decided to let us know September was on the door step. It was hot and muggy as I left my office yesterday afternoon and my house felt like someone had left a heat lamp on all day when I walked in. Posted Dec 02 2009, 08:33 AM by Cathy Erickson
I was all set to share my thoughts about the number one golf story on the planet today...you know, the upcoming final stage of the PGA Tour Q-school. Wait. What? Why are you looking at your computer screen with that funny look on your face? That's not it? Were you expecting something else? Oh, yes. Are you thinking of that Woods guy getting in a little fender bender with a tree and fire hydrant (which has now evolved into the E! True PGA Tour story about Tiger's personal exploits)? Okay, maybe you're right...and if I were Q-school, I'd be pretty mad at Tiger for being such a headline stealer! Posted Nov 19 2009, 05:13 PM by Cathy Erickson
We've hit the downward slide into November, and normally we're may-be following Q-school (and if you aren't you should - there are some Great stories there!) - but good heavens, all you have to do is browse some golf news...like Tees2Greens very own Golf International posts...and you'll see some big time golf stories...and it's November!! I became a fan of Erik Compton after reading about his quest to get his PGA tour card at Q-school last year. But Compton isn't new to golf. The 29-year old was a two-time All-American at the University of Georgia (‘00-‘01) before turning Pro in 2001. He played on the Nationwide and Canadian tours on and off, and last fall was actually his 7th attempt at the PGA Qualifying School...but his first attempt while carrying a third heart in his chest. |
AuthorWhen I found Tees2Greens website and forum I found a happy place. There were great people there and in 2009 they asked me if I wanted my own blog space. It was a dream come true!! The site is down now, but I was able to get all of my posts to be able to post here. I will always be grateful for all of the Tees2Greens folks!! ArchivesCategories
