Despite my best efforts (cheering, praying, rally caps, eating cheese) Steve Stricker did not get his first Major championship last Sunday. After Thursday's round, I almost felt like things had already slipped away when he carded a 2-over par 74, and the leader was at -6. But on Friday the weather came into play and a +1 (73) was almost 5 shots better than the scoring average of just over 78. 45 players shot 80 or worse that day (including Matt Kuchar- ouch!). At +3 he was still 7 shots back, but he made the cut and would be playing the weekend.

It's late, and I just got done picking my players for the PGA Championship fantasy golf team. I've decided that I wanted to dedicate my golf thoughts this week to my favorite golfer, Steve Stricker. You know the story, a little jump start in the beginning of his career, then a slump, then hours of practice in the Wisconsin winters and before you know it he's comeback player of the year two years in a row!! There's lots to love about Steve...he's not afraid to cry (just ask Peter Kostis!), he has a sweet putting stroke, his swing is simple yet powerful, and he's a Titleist guy! I believe in his character, he gives back to his community and to the golf world, and truly believe he appreciates every opportunity he's been given. Posted Aug 17 2010, 12:06 PM by Cathy Erickson
Just when you think golf is going to go all boring on us because we don't have Tiger to swoon over, you get the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. I'm guessing anyone with at least a slight interest in professional golf is still chattering away about how things played out over the past week. Obviously the story of the Championship is Dustin Johnson and the infamous bunker shot on the 18th. Funny thing...I wasn't even watching it! My fantasy team pegged all its hopes on Rory McIlroy and when he missed his birdie putt on 18 I knew I was sunk...already late for a family dinner, I headed to my Aunt's instead of watching the end. I walk in the front door and everyone is leaning forward in their seats staring at the TV...and there I see DJ and Nick Watney in a room and Dustin is not looking like he just won a Major...it's then that I get the full story...wow! It's Here!! The 2010 PGA Tour season starts this week! I realize for some golf fans the PGA season starts with the Masters and ends with the PGA Championship, but after finding an exploded case of Diet Coke with Lime in the back of my car on Monday (yes, it was THAT cold in my garage!), I need the warm thoughts of golf and Hawaii to replace the dread of having to clean out my car...thank goodness there were no golf clubs back there! It's the 2nd Annual Chipshot Awards!! A panel distinguished judges (me) have thought long and hard about the following categories and is giving a tip of the hat to some people, places, and things in the golf world that I happen to think are pretty darn cool. Without further ado... Favorite Golf Web Site other than Tees2Greens which is of course my Favorite!! - www.masters.org It's a repeat winner from last year! I was glued to it again this year - coverage of the par-3 tournament and streaming coverage on each day. I'm remembering back to Masters Sunday - I'm sprawled out on the couch, TV on and my laptop on a chair right by my head so I can watch some of the other players as they followed Phil and Tiger around for awhile. I had to watch Steve Stricker!! Overall, great info on the site. Honorable mention to: http://www.waggleroom.com/ and http://www.realwomengolf.com/ Posted Dec 15 2009, 08:39 AM by Cathy Erickson
I thought it might be a good time to check out how I did on my predictions for the 2009 PGA Tour season. Back on January 6, 2009 I made the following guesses in italics (see the 2009 Predictions Thread in the forums): I think I can only improve from my predictions from last year - they were not good - This is a true story. I'm awful at making predictions, but there is something fun in getting the chance to guess right every once in awhile! Posted Aug 18 2009, 09:21 PM by Cathy Erickson
On Friday morning my sister in law and my 2 nieces escorted me to the golf course since my brother had to work in the morning. It was just after 8am when I arrived and I knew the players I wanted to see were on the back 9 first. I headed over to the 10th hole and there was already a full grand stand by the green and the fairway was at least 2 people deep. I tried to find a spot to watch at the green, but there wan't much close. The 16th green was right behind the 10th green, so I decided that I was going to find a good spot by the green and commit to being there for the morning. I figured it was a good 45 minutes before we'd see the first group come through, but we were entertained by watching Nick Faldo doing some sort of backstory on the fairway with Lake Hazeltine in the background. Thursday morning my brother and I were up and at the course by 9:00am (the parking pass was awesome!). It was another warm day in MN and the winds had already started to pick up. We checked out the pairing sheets and realized that all of the players we wanted to see were all on one side in both the morning and afternoon. We knew Tiger was on the back side and had just teed off, so we made our way to the green on the par-3 17th hole to watch for the morning. Posted Aug 17 2009, 06:52 AM by Cathy Erickson
It's Monday morning and I'm back at work, still absorbing the 3 great days I had at Hazeltine and not quite believing that a player ranked 110th in the world beat Tiger Woods and will have his name engraved on the Wannamaker Trophy. YE Yang - the 91st PGA Champion! Posted Aug 10 2009, 09:58 AM by Cathy Erickson
When I talked to my brother this morning he said that Tiger Woods has already practiced at Hazeltine this morning - flew in from OH last night and was on the tee at 6:45am today. The PGA Championship has officially started! Up until this morning I didn't think I would be heading down to the Championship, but I was lucky enough to get some tickets by entering a contest online (Thank you Ryan & Waggle Room!). So now it looks like I'm going to head down for 2 days...YAY!! |
AuthorWhen I found Tees2Greens website and forum I found a happy place. There were great people there and in 2009 they asked me if I wanted my own blog space. It was a dream come true!! The site is down now, but I was able to get all of my posts to be able to post here. I will always be grateful for all of the Tees2Greens folks!! ArchivesCategories
