As I type this, I am nursing my first sunburn of 2011. Sam Johnson finally sent up some sunshine from Texas and I was on a golf course...a perfect combination! It never crossed my mind to put on sunscreen, and I am paying for that now. I was also able to sport my new Paula Creamer Sundog sunglasses that I won over at Kerplookee Fantasy golf! Yes, you read that correctly, I actually won a prize! Granted, it was 2nd place (to my friend Drew), but I still consider it a victory - and you might remember it was much thanks to Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar. After going through a few weeks of technical difficulties, the guys over at Kerplookee have things running well again - there sure seems to be a lot of players in the free game and I think there are around 45 of us in the pay game for the year. I'm also doing a private group with some of the guys there and I think I could sum that up by saying that way out of my league! But it's been a blast and I'm so glad things are going well over at www.kerplookee.com . If you are a fantasy golf fan, you should check it out! I played in a 2-gal event yesterday with one of my favorite golf pals, Deb. The format was 6-best ball, 6-chapman alt. shot, and 6 scramble. We were in a handicapped flight since there were some larger disparities in handicaps, and we ended up getting second place to the team that had the highest handicap in the flight. They say handicaps level the playing field, but sometimes, especially in team events, players with lower handicaps seem to have less of a chance of winning. But we still had a very fun day and we golfed with some great ladies.
On Monday, I also had one of my favorite golf days of the year. It's an annual grudge match that came about several years back and the "negotiations" and trash talking are almost legendary. It's hard to know which is more fun, the golf or the ride there and back. My partner (and one of my best friends) and I were able to squeak out a win, but there were some great shots all around. A great golf course and great friends...that's what it's all about for me. Next week is the annual golf scramble at my home course that I organize. With more things on my plate this year, I've been running round trying to get things put together...at the last minute of course. I wanted to say a word of thanks to my friends at http://www.epromos.com/ (especially Matt!) who totally went the extra mile to make sure I'm going to have a gift to give out this year. My order deadline came and went I could not get my paperwork to go through (dang computers!). I got them to go, finally, but I knew there was a pretty good chance of getting a "Sorry, you're too late" response. But instead of telling me no, Matt assured me he could get me my logoed items by next Wednesday. I am beyond grateful! I'm excited and nervous for the day - excited because I am golfing with some great guys - and we're defending the title! But nervous because you just never know about Mother Nature and I'm just a bit concerned about the course conditions...but I smile when I hear people talk about what a fun day it is and that all the small stuff doesn't really matter. I'm already praying for sunny & 70! In the midst of many meetings and errands run this week I came across a headline that totally made me smile. Erik Compton won the Nationwide Tour's Mexico Open last weekend! Hoo-RAY, Erik! Compton was a standout college player but just couldn't break out into the big leagues - he's found himself on several other Tours over the past 10 years and occasionally in a PGA Tour event through sponsor's exemptions. Last year's accomplishments during Q-school got Compton conditional status on the Nationwide Tour for this year and he has been cashing in with good finishes and now a win. According to an article by Kevin Maguire over at ESPN.com, Compton is almost assured of a PGA Tour card for 2012 because he'll most likely be well within the top 25 money winners on the Nationwide Tour at the end of the season. The article, found here: http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/columns/story?columnist=maguire_kevin&id=6715303&source=GOLFHeadlines is a great read, so I hope you check it out. Erik is playing at the AT&T this weekend on a sponsor's exemption, but next year it looks like he won't have to worry about being asked. Here's hoping for a great finish for Erik this weekend and for the rest of 2011. I think Erik might be on his way to seeing some dreams coming true. I hope you all have a great holiday weekend! Pray for some great weather next week in Minnesota and be sure to root for Erik this week. Happy Independence Day!
